My favourite TV series

Watching TV series is a bit like reading a book, or maybe a better comparison would be to say a saga. Starting a new season is like starting a new volume of a saga, and beginning a new chapter is like watching a brand new episode with all the twists and turns it can possess.

Watching a series takes time and so does reading a book, a story, thus giving you time to get attached to the characters and even feel at home in their world, which doesn’t necessarily happen when you watch a film. Watching a TV series is spending a bit of time out of time – and sometimes even out of space – with your favourite characters… That’s why I’m more of a TV series nerd than a film one, although I do enjoy a nice chef d‘oeuvre of the seventh art from time to time.

In this article, you’ll find a sort of classified list of my favourite TV series and those I like to watch once in a while. Obviously, this post is to be updated on a regular basis, so that I can keep on sharing my most recent discoveries with you!

Series to make you think…

Glee (comedy/drama)

gleeMy opinion about it: I know it is not a series that is to everyone’s taste but I personally loved it! Well, given my big interest in musical theatre and my deep love for it, I could not NOT be addicted to Glee! This show brought thousands of smiles to my face, and yes – I must admit it – thousand more tears too! It tells the story of lifetime friends, the story of their dreams and how they never stopped believingGlee is about opening yourself up to joy, it is about being yourself and accepting who you are and it brought millions of people together by teaching tolerance. In short, and as the characters would say it themselves, Glee is being part of something special! And… ‘being part of something special makes you special!’

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): In the face of much criticism, an optimistic high school teacher challenges a group of outcasts to realise their potential in the school’s glee club.

Once Upon A Time (drama/fantasy)

ouatMy opinion about it: It is uncontestably my favourite show of all time! It is a beautiful retelling of fairy tales, bringing and tying them all together. It is a series that makes us see our favourite fairy tale characters differently and to me, watching Once Upon A Time feels like everything finally makes perfect sense! Furthermore, the cast is from nearly everywhere in the Anglophone world, which makes me love it even more. The characters are all very endearing, even those you would first not expect to, and the storyline is filled with magic and scattered with bombshells. Add to this a pinch of well-placed flashbacks helping you understand each and every character’s history and personality, and there you go… you’re facing pure genius! But most importantly, this series delivers a greater message, that of the importance – if not the necessity – of never growing up: it tells you to keep on believing in magic, to never lose hope and to always look at the world with the eyes of a 5-year-old child.

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Emma Swan, a 28-year-old bail bonds collector, has always been a fiercely independent person since being abandoned as a baby. Her son Henry, who she gave up for adoption years ago, finds and tries to convince Emma that she is Snow White’s missing daughter. Henry shows Emma that, in the fairy tale, Prince Charming and Snow White sent her away to protect her. Emma doesn’t believe him and takes Henry back to Storybrooke…

Once Upon A Time in Wonderland (drama/fantasy)

ouat in wonderlandMy opinion about it: Once Upon A Time in Wonderland is completely in line with the original Once Upon A Time genius and stars a quintessentially British cast, which probably makes my judgment a little biased! The characters are also very endearing, but I must say Will (the Knave in the series) is definitely my favourite! He’s funny and such a softy I could not NOT like him… plus, his accent brings a huge smile to my face every time he speaks! Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, it is the story of Alice like you’ve never imagined it. Besides, I don’t really know why it’s been cancelled because it was just as good as the original Once Upon A Time show – different, that’s for sure – but just as good; although given the end of this series, I don’t really know what interest there would be to write a sequel or simply what an interesting sequel could be…

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): In Victorian England, the young and beautiful Alice tells a tale of a strange new land that exists on the other side of a rabbit hole. An invisible cat, a hookah-smoking caterpillar and playing cards that talk are just some of the fantastic things she’s seen during this impossible adventure. Surely this troubled girl must be insane and her doctors aim to cure her with a treatment that will make her forget everything. Alice seems ready to put it all behind her, especially the painful memory of the genie she fell in love with and lost forever — the handsome and mysterious Cyrus. But deep down Alice knows this world is real and just in the nick of time, the sardonic Knave of Hearts and the irrepressible White Rabbit arrive to save her from a doomed fate. Together, the trio will take a tumble down the rabbit hole to this Wonderland where nothing is impossible.

One Tree Hill (drama)

OTHMy opinion about it: I know what you’re going to say… that this is another cheesy girly series! Well, maybe… but I think it’s so much more than this. It’s a big life book, made of millions of life lessons I’ve been sticking to ever since I heard them/watched them. It’s a series I love watching and watching again, because it is a great reminder of some essential morals. It is definitely a must-watch!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): The lives of brothers Nathan and Lucas Scott as they travel through high school and college. The two brothers face among their friends the ups and downs of relationships and friendships. The pain of loss and love. The joy in family and friends. Lucas and Nathan do not start on the best of terms but through many hard times and struggles find the best in each other. Marriage, divorce, break-ups, birth, and death play a huge role.

Series to make you laugh…

Miranda (comedy)

mirandaMy opinion about it: What else can I say about Miranda but she’s the funniest comedian I know! I’ll give you 2 minutes of an episode before you burst out laughing! Consider yourself warned, but this might not be very wise to watch on public transport… but well, who cares?!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Sitcom starring Miranda Hart. It doesn’t matter what Miranda attempts in life, whether it’s dating or simply dealing with her overbearing mother, she always seems to fall flat, quite literally.

Series to give you shivers…

Arrow (action)

ArrowMy opinion about it: Arrow is a series I loved to watch at the beginning but the more it goes, the more bored I get… and this is never a good sign, is it?! The beginning of the series was great: it mixed suspense, wisdom and some life lessons that made it awesome for everyone to watch. And the core idea was in my opinion about what it is to come back and never ever be the same person again… But unfortunately, I kind of willingly lost track of everything because I don’t enjoy it as much as at the beginning and Oliver has also sort of got to my nerves :/!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Oliver Queen and his father are lost at sea when their luxury yacht sinks. His father doesn’t survive. Oliver survives on an uncharted island for five years learning to fight, but also learning about his father’s corruption and unscrupulous business dealings. He returns to civilisation a changed man, determined to put things right. He disguises himself with the hood of one of his mysterious island mentors, arms himself with a bow and sets about hunting down the men and women who have corrupted his city.

Beauty & the Beast (drama/fantasy)

p9263754_b_v9_aeMy opinion about it: Beauty & the Beast is a beautiful epic love story. It is about a destined love, that of Catherine Chandler (Beauty), the stunning and brilliant detective, and Vincent Keller (the Beast), the handsome and mysterious doctor/former soldier… This series is also a fight for a normal life that Cat and Vincent will never really win because they are everything but ordinary, and that’s what I love about their relationship and about the series: Cat and Vincent will never fully fit in society, they will always be ‘extraordinary’ and that’s this adventurous and spicy element that makes it great and not ‘just good’; and if there wasn’t this bit of adventure, their story and the series would lose its interest! At the end of season 3, Cat and Vincent finally do get married, and even though it’s not the grand traditional wedding they wanted, it’s something that is more like them, more simple and more intimate and special. Many other themes are also dealt with in Beauty & the Beast, including the fight for humanity and its constant dilemma between good and evil (mostly for Vincent), and therefore self-discovery… I really can’t wait for season 4 to see what happens next to the four very endearing main characters!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Detective Catherine Chandler is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective. When she was a teenager, she witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen and herself was saved by someone – or something. Years have passed and while investigating a murder, Catherine discovers a clue that leads her to Vincent Keller, who was reportedly killed in 2002. Catherine learns that Vincent is actually still alive and that it was he who saved her many years before. For mysterious reasons that have forced him to live outside of traditional society, Vincent has been in hiding for the past 10 years to guard his secret – when he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses.

Charmed (drama/science fiction/fantasy)

CharmedMy opinion about it: This is probably the first ever series I watched and I remember how addicted I was to that show! I’ve always enjoyed witches’ stories and magic interfering in the world we know, and so… very naturally, I made my own Book of Shadows and invented spells and pretended I had similar powers to the Halliwell sisters and it was really fun! It was a part of my growing old which started to make me understand how important it was to never grow up and always watch with glittering eyes the whole world that’s surrounding you!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Three sisters (Prue, Piper and Phoebe) reunite and unlock their powers to become the Charmed Ones, the most powerful witches to exist. Now they must vanquish evil and save innocents while living their lives as normal women in the real world. Life isn’t so easy when you’re Charmed. In Season 4, half-sister Paige took over for the dearly departed Prue, to once again form the Charmed Ones and fight evil and save innocents.

Ghost Whisperer (drama/fantasy)

ghost whispererMy opinion about it: Another extraordinary story in a very ordinary world… and you know how much I love those! Melinda Gordon can see and talk to ghosts, she cares about people and help them, but above all, she’s an extremely sensitive character, which makes her and everything about her so very endearing!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Melinda Gordon is a young newlywed with the unique ability to communicate with the earthbound spirits of people who have died — and who seek her help. Melinda uses her gift to relay significant messages and important information to the living, but sometimes the messages she receives are intense and confusing. As a result, she is often met with questions and scepticism by the survivors. But when Melinda is able to help both the lost souls who contact her and those who are still alive, she knows that her unique talent is an asset and not a liability.

Pretty Little Liars (drama)

PLLMy opinion about it: Pretty Little Liars is a quite girly detective series, which I always enjoy watching, even though the season 1 plot took a very long time to untangle – a too long time in my opinion (I mean, we had to wait until mid-season 6 to know who A was!). This thing added to the numerous breaks there have been made it more and more difficult for me to come back to the story… but once I was in the game again, I simply couldn’t stop watching, eager to know what was going to happen next! Plus, the main actresses are awesome… so it is making it all worth it!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Based on the Pretty Little Liars series of young adult novels by Sara Shepard, the series follows the lives of four girls — Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily — whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their queen bee, Alison. One year later, they begin receiving messages from someone using the name ‘A’, who threatens to expose their secrets — including long-hidden ones they thought only Alison knew.

The Flash (action/drama/science fiction)

the flashMy opinion about it: I started watching The Flash shortly after Arrow and I’ve been following both series kind of at the same time, but quickly I started having a strong penchant for The Flash and its story, and even its cast that I find friendlier. Furthermore, as a hero, I find the character of Barry more sensitive and closer to his audience than that of Oliver (alias the Arrow).

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): After a particle accelerator causes a freak storm, CSI Investigator Barry Allen is struck by lightning and falls into a coma. Months later he awakens with the power of super speed, granting him the ability to move through Central City like an unseen guardian angel. Though initially excited by his newfound powers, Barry is shocked to discover he is not the only « meta-human » who was created in the wake of the accelerator explosion – and not everyone is using their new powers for good. Barry and his partners from S.T.A.R. Labs dedicate their life to protect innocent people. For now, only a few close friends and associates know that Barry is literally the fastest man alive, but it won’t be long before the world learns what Barry Allen has become… The Flash.

The Vampire Diaries (drama/fantasy)

The vampire diariesMy opinion about it: Another series I’ve been addicted to for ages! However, it’s a bit like Pretty Little Liars in the sense that after a while, it was harder for me to come back to Mystic Falls for many different reasons that are mostly not related to the series itself, but still… some things sort of kept me from watching the new episodes and then I started watching it again and I stopped again and then went back to it as hooked as I was at the beginning! It is another vampire story, but it’s definitely worth the watch, if only for the amazing and nearly too perfect Nina Dobrev as well as for all the twists and turns of the plot. It’s a series that gets me every time – that’s made me shed some tears, I must admit it – and whose end left me satisfied but sceptical… I mean, given that Nina Dobrev is leaving the cast, things are not going to be completely the same… but well, people move on, right?! So let’s give this series a chance, even if it’s without Elena… especially if it’s without her.

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): As the school year begins, Elena Gilbert is immediately drawn to a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore. Elena has no way of knowing that Stefan is a vampire struggling to live peacefully among humans, while his brother Damon is the embodiment of vampire violence and brutality.

Twisted (drama)

twistedMy opinion about it: Twisted is another teen detective series, whose plot has thickened with time, making it a really good show. I loved it and I watched the only season very quickly because it’s very addictive! Furthermore the relationships between the characters are very cute. I am disappointed and I think it’s a shame there won’t be a second season only because the show did get enough viewers! It’s actually pathetic to think that in the end, it’s all about how much money you earned and not about how many people you touched and gave a smile or tears or anything to. If only money wasn’t what our society revolves around, it would certainly be better in many ways (but that’s not the subject here…). Plus, the end of season 1 was horrible – not in the sense that it was bad but in the sense that it was extremely suspenseful!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Twisted is a one-hour mystery full of twists and turns that follows Danny Desai, a charismatic 16-year-old with a troubled past who returns to his hometown after spending five years in juvenile detention. Immediately branded an outcast, Danny attempts to reconnect with his two childhood best friends, Jo and Lacey, and to smooth over tensions with his mother Karen, whose socialite status plummeted after her son’s imprisonment and the mysterious disappearance of her husband, Danny’s father. When a fellow student is found dead in her home, Danny instantly becomes the prime suspect and town spirals into a frenzy of suspicion and mystery. Jo and Lacey must decide if their childhood friend is unforgivable, or if he’s really a victim being persecuted for his own twisted secrets.

Series to kill some time…

Clem (comedy/drama)

clemMy opinion about it: It’s not a highly intellectual show, but it’s good enough to kill some time or just relax and be cheesy for a while after a very busy and dense day.

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Clem recalls the story of a teenager, who gets pregnant at 16 and who has to deal with the different tensions between her parents and Julien, Valentin’s father. It is a series mixing the daily struggles of nowadays teenagers and those of a young and strong-headed mother.

Gossip girl (drama)

gossip girlMy opinion about it: This series is full of love/hate relationships and is hence very cheesy, but oh, so addictive! I mean… who doesn’t like a bit of gossip anyway?! Plus, if only for Serena’s, Blair’s and Jenny’s wardrobes, you have to watch Gossip Girl. Seriously though, when it comes to fashion or interior design, this show is a goldmine of inspiration!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): The series begins with the return of Upper East Side « it girl », Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) from a mysterious stay at a boarding school in Cornwall, Connecticut. Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), whom creators describe as the queen at the centre of their chess game, is a long-time friend and occasional rival of Serena’s, and the queen bee of Constance Billard School’s social scene. The story also follows Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), the bad boy of the Upper East Side; « golden boy » Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), Chuck’s best friend and Blair’s boyfriend for many years. However, their relationship had been rocky ever since Serena left for boarding school. Other characters of the turbulent Manhattan scene: Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), Dan’s best friend Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr), and Dan’s sister, Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen).

Grey’s Anatomy (drama)

grey's anatomyMy opinion about it: I watched Grey’s Anatomy for a quite long time when I had nothing else to watch, and I liked it, even though I thought it was a bit redundant sometimes. But it’s a good show that also teaches you human lessons and whose main/central narrative is pretty strong and therefore worth the watch!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Meet Meredith Grey, a brilliant first-year surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. Together with her fellow residents-in-training, Meredith navigates her way through the daily traumas and social land mines of the life inside the hospital and out in the real world. Grey’s Anatomy is a smart and witty look at young people struggling to be doctors and doctors struggling to be human.

Hart of Dixie (comedy/drama)

My opinion about it:
I’ve never really been following Hart of Dixie, but some episodes retained my attention, which made me want to talk about this show in here. It’s funny – in an American way of being funny – but it’s funny anyway and a good show to chill out!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Fast-talking New Yorker and brand new doctor Zoe Hart has it all figured out – after graduating top of her class from medical school, she’ll follow in her father’s footsteps and become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. But when her dreams fall apart, Zoe decides to accept an offer from a stranger, Dr. Harley Wilkes, to work with him at his small practice in Bluebell, Alabama. Zoe arrives in this small Gulf Coast town only to find that Harley has passed away and left his half of the medical practice to her in his will.

Summerland (drama)

summerlandMy opinion about it: I’m going to be honest with you… the only reason why I started watching Summerland was because it was starring Jesse McCartney, aka my teen crush haha! No but seriously, Summerland is a good summer show, reminding you of summer romances and bringing you to sunny California! Definitely a good watch!

Synopsis (source – TV ShowTime): Bradin, Nikki and Derrick are three kids from an average normal Kansas household. Their whole life is thrown upside-down when their parents are tragically killed in a car accident. Ava Gregory (their aunt) gets custody of her niece and nephews and they move into her Californian home (in Summerland). Ava, a struggling clothes designer, lives with her best friend and business partner, Susannah Rexford, her friend, an ex- professional surfer, Jay Robertson and her ex-boyfriend, real estate agent, Johnny Durrant. All four of them are highly unequipped to handle children and are not use to including them in their everyday lives.
